Metronomes - a love hate thing...

I've been learning a little bit about recording my own music and, to be honest, I keep getting really frustrated. One thing that I struggle with is having to play with a metronome. This is pretty important because if you add a new track it's pretty hard to play along with the first one if the tempo isn't consistent. My partner, who is also an independent musician and producer suggested I use a drum track instead and for some reason that is way better for me!

I have never had any formal training on an instrument. I actually learned how to read music while I was getting my degree for music in college, I don't recommend this. I was talking to my friend the other day and I realized that the first time I ever used a metronome to practice music was when I was in college and I had to learn to play piano in 9 months or I would have to change my major. I had already changed my major twice and I really wanted to be a music major (even though it was the hardest thing I ever did). So, I learned (if you could call it that) to play piano in 9 months and I learned to use a metronome. It was not a good way to learn piano and (again) I don't recommend it to anyone! Looking back, I'd say it was pretty traumatic. Somehow, I passed my piano proficiency and I got my degree. I have a bachelor's degree in music and I am really proud of myself for finishing.

Anyway, it's funny how these seemingly little things can make such a difference. Music can be so intuitive and so technical at the same time. I am constantly navigating this balance and working to find what's best for me and my process.
